Sector trends 2027

This sector remains one of Geneva’s showcases: since January 2025, 51 new NGOs have set up operations in Geneva, and 6 new countries have established permanent missions there over the past two years. The canton is now home to 42 international organizations, 497 NGOs, and 186 countries represented.

For several years now, international organizations, UN agencies and NGOs have been facing increased budgetary constraints. This has led to more targeted hiring, more selective replacements, and greater reliance on temporary or project-based contracts.

Teams are increasingly expected to achieve more with fewer resources by using AI and automation to boost productivity. At the same time, organizations, much like those in the private sector, are benchmarking operating costs across the world and may shift activities to lower-cost locations / other regional offices.

This trend is reinforced by the fact that donors often require that their grants be used directly on the ground, not only as a financial resource, but also as a means of hiring local people.
